Quills and nibs clogged by ink needed constant wiping or scraping and a pen wiper was a writing accessory, a brush, bristles upwards, in a base that could be plain or represented as the back bristle of animals.

This one is made by a brass circular base, bearing bristles at the top. It is a rare, collectable item. All antique writing collectors should get one!
